Production Company Research- Independent Study

There are certain production companies that are often linked with horror films and so it would be appropriate to the genre to use one of these for our films. One of these would be 'Hammer films' produtions.
This company has been associated with films such as
- The curse of Frankenstein
- The Mummy
- Jekyll and Hyde
- Zombies
This company is based in London which is also a plus becuase our film would be very London based with british actors starring in it so it is in keeping. The fot and style looks very suitable to the horror genre and the black and red colour connotates blood and death.
However, the company is not very widely known or heard of and so this could be a negative.

Another company associated with the horror genre would be 'twisted pictures' productions.
This company is very widely known in the horror genre becuause they are associated with the saw franchise. As well as this, they produced 'texas chainsaw 3D' and 'The tortured.'
The poularity of this production company is a plus because the viewers know what kind of film they are getting becuase the production company is associated with so many famous horrors.
As well as this, they look of the logo andtypography is perfectly suited to a horror film, the barbed wire and even the word 'twisted' straight away set up the horrofic and scary feel to the film.

Another production company is 'Amicus productions' most famous for the films 'the city of the dead,' 'the skull' and the beast must die.'

Whilst the production company is often associated with horror films, the typography looks cheesy and outdated. This is an unrealistic representation of horror as the blood is cartoon and fake looking and this would reflect badly on our film.

Ghost house productions are a less popular and well known company but their name and typography suits the supernatural film we want to create.

The image looks scary but modern which suits our film, as the film is supernatural the word 'ghost' also hits the nail on the head. I prefer the look of the production company to all the others, however i appreciate that the fact it is not as well known is a down point.
However, the company is associated with some famous films such as
- The grudge
- Drag me to hell
- evil dead

opening scene- Grave encounters deconstruction

Grave encounters is a supernatural horror with a similar storyline to what we want to create so I looked at the opening minutes to see how they started their film.
The film starts with the 'executive producer' of the fake film on screen, Doing this would be a good idea because it makes the film seem like a documentary which makes it feel more real. He's surrounded by recording equipment backing up what he is saying and making him seem like a real producer.
The camera work is amateur and it isn't held in a steady way. The camera zooms in suddenly and shakes around adding to the feel of it being realistic and a documentary. Real camera, real person behind the camera, lack of camera skills- all create the feeling that the actors and the events are all very real which makes it more scary.
Typical grave yard scene- shows the difference between the dead, the alive and the ghosts who won't leave the planet. Grave yards are a part of everyday life that people may have to come into contact with so using them can be more frightening. The ghost like figure shows the supernatural feel straight away. Also, the darkness of the night can be unsettling.
Night vision effect on the camera- adds to realism. Gives everything a dark green looking colour that makes things look more grimy and disgusting. The fact that it is in night vision means the characters are in complete darkness and that makes the viewer feel more afraid for them. Abandoned looking building- left to be haunted and inhabited by anything- adds mystery and suspense. Use of a girl is also scary because females are seen as more vulnerable and less strong.
