Appropriateness for a film opening
- This film opening, does appear to be suitable for its purpose.
- For example, within the first minute and a half, the clip displays all of the conventions of a film opening;
- Opening credits,
- Identifies the location
- Identifies the narrative
- Identifies the genre.
Appropriateness for target audience
- As there is no description that appears with this film opening, it is quite difficult to decipher the target audience.
- I would say the target audience is 15+ as the opening involves:
- Death
- Ghosts
- Etc.
Appropriateness for genre
- Again, as there is no description, I have to guess the genre
- Based on the conventions I have seen within this film opening, I would say this clip is that of a supernatural horror
- Due to the fact there are ghosts, death, a remote location, the victim appears to be a young teenage girl.
Editing
- There are a lot of straight cuts when the action increases, adds tension to the chase scene
- Slow editing when the victim is approaching the grave of her "loved one", adds sadness and solidarity to the scene
- The cuts are done in time with the non diegetic background music e.g. slower when she is approaching the grave, the beat increases during the chase scene
- The group also use a technique called a fade it. This is where two clips overlap in order to create a specific effect. Here it is done for the horror, eerie feel about the scene.
Camera angles
- There are quite a lot of match on action shots as well as other types such as:
- Long shots
- Establishing Shots
- Mid Shots
- Close Up Shots
Sound
- Throughout the opening there are quite a few diegetic sounds such as water trickling (0.01) and wind blowing (0.05). Although these sounds add effect to the scene, they feel a little unnecessary. For example, cutting these sounds out and covering it with non-diegetic music would seem more professional.
- There is some non-diegetic music (0.20) which is added in order to build tension and suspense.
Titles
- The opening does include all of the necessary opening credits however there are some negative points
- The titles appear and disappear very quickly making them very difficult to read in time
- The letters flash alternatively - this means it is very hard to read the word without having to fill in the other letters for yourself
- On the other hand, changing the colour of the titles in order to make them stand out against the background was a good idea.
