O Death - Supernatural -Deconstruction

O Death - Supernatural -Deconstruction

The centerpiece of this scene is most definitely the non-diegetic song which is played throughout.
Here are the lyrics so that you will understand why this song correlates to this scene:

O, Death. O, Death. O, Death
Won't you spare me over another year?
Well, what is this that I can't see
With ice cold hands takin' hold of me.
When God is gone, and the Devil takes hold,
Who'll have mercy on your soul.
My name is Death, and the end is here.

In the scene, you see close up shots of an old man coming out of a very nice car, and he is dressed all in black, and you know that there is something that is not quite right about him, due to the song that is played in the background.
All of the next shots, which shows him walking down the streets of chicago are slow motion shots, which builds up the tension and there are split seconds of the sped up clips, which speeds up whenever there is a big bass sound. The only diegetic sound is when the young man bumps into this old man, which is revealed to be Death as the young man dies after touching him.

This song is actually a traditional dirge, which is a mourning song, which is sung at a funeral. There is a drone in the background which sounds like an accordion which creates a really sombre atmosphere.
The clips are played in parallel to the song, and timed to the lyrics e.g. The man starts to collapse when the lyrics go "who'll have mercy on your soul," and when the old man (Death) starts to wipe his shoulder when the lyrics go, "When God is gone, and the Devil takes hold," and this foreshadows something bad about to happen.

This has got to be one of the best opening scenes ever for me, because the music is so perfect, and the scenes are so intense.
