Diegetic Sound Practical

Diegetic Sound Practical

TV noise with paper wrapper

The first sound I wanted to make, was to try and recreate the sound of the static noise of a television.

I tried to use the method of using a sweet wrapper, or something of similar material, and rustling it against the microphone, to make it sound noisy. I got this idea from the movie "Parent Trap."
After listening back to the sound, I didn't think that the result was very pleasing, as it didn't sound quite full enough, so I would probably have to edit it somehow, if I was to use it in our opening sequence. However, I thought that this sound could actually be used for when a pencil is rapidly being swept across some paper whilst drawing.

TV noise with duster

Another method I tried to do, to create the static sound, was to use a duster. and ruffle it around the micrphone, through a pop filter (so that the dust does not enter the diaphragm of the microphone, damaging it). Again, the result wasn't very satisfying, so I edited the sound by changing the EQ of the sound.
I completely cut off any bass to the sound, so that only the high frequencies would be able to come through, and then I amplified certain high frequencies and adjusted them so that it sounded right.

After the editing, I was more happy with the result.

Door

I also wanted to record the sound of a door shutting, so I put my microphone a metre away from the door, and I slammed it shut. The result sounded good, but I added a little bit of echo to the sound, so that it sounds like it is in a very large empty room with a lot of reverb. I also adjusted the EQ so that a lot of the bass would come through, giving it more impact.

Computer Generated Noise

The final one, was also TV noise, but instead of recording the sound, I recreated the sound with the Test Oscillator which is built into the programme Logic Pro 9, which I was using. This is probably the most usable TV noise sound.
