Pathetic Fallacy Deconstruction

Amityville Horror:
When thinking about Pathetic Fallacy, I remembered that the best scene I remember watching, which involved pathetic fallacy was definitely Amityville Horror. Towards the end of the film there is a clip which has great weather conditions and looks likes this:

  • The fact it is raining instantly adds a bad mood to the scene. Rain, in the real world, makes people feel miserable and down. It has the same effect within a film. It changes the audiences mood for the worse.
  • In addition to this, the colour quality of the film itself is rather dark. This makes the audience think the scene is filmed at night which also brings the audience's mood down.
  • Renolds is standing out in the rain, in normal clothes. However it's the fact he is just standing there with an emotionless expression on his face. In reality, anyone would think this is a little weird. This mood rubs off on the audience creating tension and stress.

  • The previous image is very contrasting compared to this shot in the scene. The clear sunny skies reflect a happy, cheery mood and it also has the same effect on the audience.
  • The colours within this shot are very bright and summery. This makes the audience believe that the scene was genuinely filmed in a real place within the summer time
