Deconstruction: Editing Techniques

I am deconstructing three scenes based on the editing techniques used within them.

MAMA

  • This clip in unusual compared to other films of this genre. Most films use fast pace editing techniques to add tension and suspense.
  • However, Mama does the opposite. Slow straight cuts in addition to slow camera movements adds tension and suspense to the scene.
  • Having the music's beats in time with the straight cuts also adds suspense and tension to this scene which works well in order to create the best audience experience.

SINISTER

  • The main thing I noticed about this clip is the very fast pass editing. There is a lot of straight cut scenes however, these are taken from different angles which gives the effect of being disorientated therefore creating a unknown sense of location or area.
  • Although the beginning starts off with  a lot of slow pace straight cuts, I feel this adds suspense to something that is about to happen. In addition to this, the music is also added in in time with the cuts which is a good effect to add tension.
